The hunt was literally the last thing on earth I felt like doing. The thought of running right now literally nauseated me. Professor Rollins looked at me standing there in my Academy t-shirt and workout pants and shook her head. “Cali, why don’t you sit this one out?”

Oh, how I wish.

Nurse Cassidy was right.

I was getting tired.

Those shots, while helping, weren’t exactly the energy boost I needed.

When we got back, I was so getting one of those letters to excuse me for the day and go back to bed. I didn’t need anything more...

But Anna was my best friend, and I wanted to protect her. I’d already seen the questioning looks her way as we’d walked out onto the field for the hunt. And not only from the students, Torbin too.

“Thank you, maybe I’ll just walk? See what I can pick up. I’m just a little claustrophobic after all that time in the infirmary.”

She studied me for a moment then gave a small nod. “That sounds like a fair idea.” She looked out at the trees. “And not too far. If you don’t feel well come right back and I’ll write you a note to excuse you for the rest of the day. I honestly didn’t expect to see you.”

Me either, I thought to myself. “Thank you.”

I took off down the path we all started off of. Anna hadn’t texted him. I’d told her his phone had been in his jacket and, as far as I knew, both were long gone. And we didn’t need to let whoever had the phone know we were asking questions and put bigger targets on us than we already had.

Whatever evidence had been on that jacket or, maybe more likely, contained in the jacket pocket, had been more than enough to warrant knocking me out.

I just wish I’d been more aware of my surroundings. There were still quite a few people outside who hadn’t been herded in right away. I should have asked if there were any security cameras in the courtyard. Weren’t cameras everywhere now? No one seemed to have a need for privacy anymore.

I met Anna by the massive tree we’d agreed on as a meeting place beforehand and followed her around a curving path that went up an incline. I found Storm sitting on the ground, leaning against another tree. Maybe she’d found him first and come back to wait for me.

“How’s your head?” He asked soon as he saw me. Almost the first nice thing he’d ever said to me.

“Be careful, I’d almost think you cared.”

He snorted. “What do you want to know? I was drugged, I don’t remember much.”

“I got a note too,” Anna said, pulling a piece of paper from her pants pocket and holding it out to him.

“You did?” He took the crumpled paper and skimmed it. “That’s not my handwriting.” He held the note back out to her for a moment, but she shook her head and he pocketed it.

“I didn’t think so. Maybe we need to go back up on that roof?” I suggested.
